Jonás Cuarón, one of the young generation representatives of Mexican cinema, was born in Mexico City in 1981. His connection with the world of cinema is almost innate: his father is the director Alfonso Cuarón, who left his mark on world cinema. However, instead of remaining in this shadow, Jonás Cuarón managed to find his own voice. The first important step of his career came with the 2007 film Año uña. This low-budget production, which draws attention with its original narrative language consisting of photographic frames, revealed Cuarón's creative courage. In the same year, he also took part in the production of the documentary The Shock Doctrine, adapted from the famous book of Naomi Klein. He made his real breakthrough in the international arena with the projects he worked on with his father. He co-wrote the script of the 2013 film Gravity with Alfonso Cuarón; This space thriller, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, had a great impact both at the box office and among critics. Also in the same year, he directed the short film Aningaaq, set in the Gravity universe. This film presented an independent perspective by telling the story of a character who lives a lonely life in the Far Pole. In 2015, he strengthened his portrait of a mature narrator with Çöl (Çöl), which he directed. This film, which conveys the difficult crossing journey at the American border in a tense language, kept the audience in a breathtaking pace and shed a strong light on the phenomenon of immigration. Chupa, in which he focused on a more accessible narrative, became a family-oriented adventure film that he released for Netflix in 2023. The film, which aims to bring together children and adult audiences by leaning on Mexican folklore, once again demonstrated Cuarón's flexibility in different genres.
