Slatan Dudow

Born in 1903 in the Bulgarian town of Zaribrod, Slatan Dudow went down in history as one of the most original and ideologically consistent directors of German cinema. Throughout his career, he never abandoned his understanding of social realism; It dealt honestly with the problems of the working class, women's issues and social inequality on the screen. The production that left Dudow's name permanently etched in cinema was Kuhle Wampe oder: Wem gehört die Welt?, which he prepared together with Bertolt Brecht. has happened. While this film, released in 1932, told the drama of a Berlin family in unemployment and poverty, it also had to face censorship in Germany at the time. This production, supported by its Marxist perspective, sharp editing and Hanns Eisler's music, continues to be considered among the masterpieces of films about the working class in world cinema. Dudow, who had to leave Germany after National Socialism came to power, settled in East Germany after years of exile and continued to produce there. He became one of the founding names of GDR cinema in the post-war period. Unser täglich Brot, produced in 1949, was the first important work of this new period; He painted a portrait of a society trying to be reborn from the destruction of war. Frauenschicksale, shot in 1952, strongly demonstrated Dudow's interest in women's issues by bringing together the stories of women from different backgrounds. The director continued this theme in the following years; With Verwirrung der Liebe, dated 1959, he tried a lighter narrative, appealing to the younger generation, and created an extraordinary romantic comedy in GDR cinema. Stärker als die Nacht from 1954 and Der Hauptmann von Köln from 1956 are among Dudow's other important works in which he reflects his anti-fascist attitude on the screen. Throughout all these films, Dudow demonstrated ideological consistency and did not ignore the cinematographic narrative. He died in a traffic accident on July 12, 1963, before completing the film Christine, which he started shooting for. The films he left behind continue to be permanent reference points not only of GDR cinema but also of world social cinema.
