Pierre Boulle
Details
French writer Pierre Boulle was born on February 20, 1912 in Avignon. After studying engineering, he spent a significant part of his life in Malaysia and Burma; He fought in the ranks of the French Resistance during World War II and was captured by Japanese forces for a time. These experiences became the basic raw material for his most important works in the following years. Boulle established his real identity in the literary world as a novelist; However, over time, the works he wrote moved to cinema, making his name a globally recognized name. The novel The Bridge on Kwai, published in 1952, was a powerful narrative that dealt with the forcing of war prisoners to build a bridge in the Burmese forests, on the axis of human dignity, madness and the absurdity of war. This novel was turned into a movie directed by David Lean in 1957, which became one of the classics of world cinema. The Bridge on Kwai movie won many Oscar awards, especially for the screenplay; However, the script's credit went through a controversial process due to the blacklisting practices of the period, and Boulle's name was caught in the middle of this complexity. The author's second big shock was Planet of the Apes, which he published in 1963. This science fiction novel, which tells about a dystopian planet where monkeys replace humans, has been recognized as one of the most original examples of its genre. The novel was brought to the big screen in 1968 with the movie Planet of the Apes, starring Charlton Heston, which was an extremely brave production for that period. The film created a great impact and opened the door to a long-lasting cinema universe. Sequels such as Return to the Planet of the Apes and Escape from the Planet of the Apes, followed by an animated series and the 2001 remake, were all inspired by Boulle's single novel. Boulle wrote many other works in different genres throughout his life; However, these two novels formed the backbone of his literary legacy. These works, which stand apart with both their philosophical depth and narrative power, left deep traces on pop culture. Pierre Boulle passed away in Paris on January 30, 1994. The universe he left behind continued to expand and meet new generations of audiences after his death.
