Asgar Farhadi, one of the strongest voices of Iranian cinema on the world stage, was born in Isfahan in 1972. After studying theater at Tehran University, he started his career with television and short film works; However, he created his real identity with his feature-length cinema works. Ferhadi started to attract international attention with the 2009 film About Elly. This film, which tells the story of a group of friends on vacation on the Caspian Sea shore who are shaken by a tragic loss, won him the Best Director Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival and made his name known on a global scale. He made his real breakthrough with 2011's A Separation. This film, which examines the secrets and moral dilemmas that follow each other during the divorce process of an Iranian couple, earned the director both an Oscar award and a Golden Globe; It also brought Iran its first Foreign Language Film Oscar. This work, which contains deep social and moral layers behind its simple narrative, is considered a masterpiece that clarifies Ferhadi's cinematographic signature. In 2013, he demonstrated the same mastery in a different geography with the French production Past. This film, which deals with complex family relationships and the weight of the past on the present, received high praise from international critics. The Salesman, which he shot in 2016, brought him his second Oscar with its tension and social criticism inspired by Arthur Miller's play. Moving to Spain in 2018's Everybody Knows, Ferhadi worked with international stars such as Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem. Hero, which he shot in 2021, received great acclaim at Cannes, depicting a prisoner's predicament in the face of social pressures. Ferhadi, who masterfully handled themes such as moral questioning, domestic tension and social pressure in his decades-long career, continues to be one of the directors who left the most lasting marks among the directors who brought Iranian cinema to world standards.
