Serge Merlin

Born in 1932 in the Algerian town of Sainte-Barbe-du-Tlélat, Serge Merlin pursued a long career as one of the most original characters of French cinema and theatre. Discovering his passion for cinema at an early age, Merlin left a permanent mark on the industry with his unique facial expression and deep understanding of acting over the years. Merlin, who is best known internationally for the movie Amelie directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, played Raymond Dufayel, an old painter confined to his home. This 2001 romantic fantasy received critical acclaim around the world, and Merlin's acting was considered one of the film's most memorable elements. The elegance with which he brought this fragile yet wise character to life was engraved in the memories of moviegoers. Before Amelie, Merlin had been involved in powerful projects. He took on the role of Pierre Philippeaux in the 1983 film Danton, which brought the complex atmosphere of the French Revolution to Andrzej Wajda's camera. City of Lost Children, released in 1995, was a dystopian masterpiece by Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet; Merlin gave a strong performance in this movie too. He played the character of Noirtier de Villefort in 1998's The Count of Monte Cristo, adapted from Alexandre Dumas' immortal novel. Merlin, who remained active in the later stages of his career, continued to appear on stage in productions such as L'homme qui rit and Witnesses. This versatile actor, who built a bridge between theater and cinema, also sat in the director's chair. Serge Merlin, who made profound contributions to the French narrative tradition throughout his long-term career, passed away in February 2019. The roles he left behind wrote him into history as one of the indispensable names of European cinema.
