James J. Braddock

James Walter Braddock, one of the most inspiring names in American boxing history, was born on June 7, 1905, in New York to an Irish immigrant family. Braddock, who went down in history with the nickname "Cinderella Man", is the hero of one of the rare comeback stories of the sports world. Beginning his professional career at the age of 21, Braddock quickly rose to prominence at light heavyweight; However, he entered a long-term decline after losing the championship match against Tommy Loughran in 1929. The years of the Great Depression further deepened this decline. Braddock, whose boxing license was revoked due to chronic fractures in his right hand, worked as a porter in New Jersey ports for his family and had to apply for government assistance. His miraculous start, which started with him winning the Corn Griffin match in 1934 as a last-minute substitute, carried him to the world championship match with Max Baer in 1935. On that historic night, when the odds appeared to be 10 to 1 against him, he defeated Baer by point in 15 rounds and became the world heavyweight champion. This victory turned into a real symbol of hope for the American people who were overwhelmed by the economic crisis. He retained his title until he lost the belt to Joe Louis in 1937. Her life was brought to the big screen in 2005 with the movie Cinderella Man, directed by Ron Howard and starring Russell Crowe. Braddock also appeared as himself in the documentaries prepared for this production. He died due to heart failure on November 29, 1974.
