A Married Man, produced in 1983, and Monk Dawson, which was adapted into a movie in 1998, were among the works that revealed that Read handled themes such as marriage, identity and faith in different ways. Monk Dawson attracted particular attention as it was adapted from his novel, which tells the internal reckoning of a character who leaves the clergy and steps into worldly life. Read is a master of writing who has gained a unique and consistent place in English literature with his approach that focuses on human moral boundaries and existential breaking moments in his writings.
