Steve McQueen

London-born Steve McQueen was born in England in 1969 and over time became one of the most original voices of both European and world cinema. McQueen, who comes from a visual arts background, made a name for himself in international art circles with his video and installation works before moving on to cinema; This background gave his films a deep aesthetic sensitivity and an extraordinary narrative power. His first feature-length film, Hunger, was released in 2008 and brought the director's name to the international arena by depicting the prison hunger strike of Irish pro-independence prisoner Bobby Sands with shocking realism. His subsequent film, Shame, dragged the audience into an overwhelming psychological depth with the theme of sexual addiction embodied by Michael Fassbender in the lead role. The work in which McQueen had his name written in gold letters was 12 Years a Slave, produced in 2013. This film, based on the real life story of Solomon Northup, brought the brutality of the American slave system to the screen with an extraordinary cinematic language and won three Oscars, including Best Picture; With this award, McQueen became the first Black director in history to receive the Best Picture Oscar. Widows, which he directed in 2018, attracted attention as a heist movie that skillfully blended tension and social criticism. McQueen, who proved his knowledge in cinema with the Small Ax series he brought to the small screen, examined the experiences of Caribbean immigrants in England with five separate films in this anthology series he prepared for the BBC. Continuing his work with projects such as Uprising, which is a strong documentary, and Blitz, which draws attention with its dramatic forces, McQueen adopts as an artistic mission to confront the social memory, the resistance of the individual, and to bring to the fore the invisible pages of history in each of his productions.
