Bee Vang

Born in Fresno, California in 1991, Bee Vang stands out as one of the rare actors representing the Hmong identity in American cinema. Perhaps the biggest step in his career was with Gran Torino, directed by Clint Eastwood, when he was only sixteen years old. In this 2008 film, he played Thao, a young Hmong boy struggling with the pressure of gangs at a difficult turning point in his life. This production, which Eastwood both directed and starred in, attracted great attention around the world and made Wang's name known in the world of cinema. Gran Torino was considered an important film in terms of bringing the experiences of Hmong immigrant communities in American society to the big screen. Vang gave a convincing and sincere performance in this film, even though he had no professional acting training. After the production, he participated in the short documentary Gran Torino: Next Door, prepared in 2009, as himself. In addition to his film career, Vang has also added his voice to academic and social debates on Hmong culture and identity. His close experience of the issue of representation in the movie in which he took his first step into acting turned him into a figure who openly shares his thoughts on this subject. In 2024, he appeared in the movie Voice of Shadows as Father James. This production marked Vang's return to the screen after a long break and once again demonstrated his capacity as an actor to play different characters. While his career is still maturing, Bee Vang continues to be an original player who carries the recognition he gained with Gran Torino and the responsibility of representing the Hmong identity.
