Kátia Lund
Details
Born in São Paulo in 1966, Kátia Lund has emerged as one of the most original voices in Brazilian cinema and television. Blending social realism with a strong narrative structure throughout his career, Lund has particularly scrutinized the vulnerable parts of Brazil, urban poverty and the lives of ordinary people. His first major attention in the international arena was with the 1999 documentary Notícias de uma Guerra Particular. This documentary, which examines the reality of Rio de Janeiro's favelas, drug wars and the role of the police in this complex equation, revealed Lund's sharp stance on social issues. He then worked with Fernando Meirelles and contributed to the preparation process of the world-famous Cidade de Deus; This experience further matured his cinema language. The Cidade dos Homens television series, which started in 2002, became the symbol of Lund's deep-rooted bond with the Brazilian audience. The production, which tells the story of two young people growing up in favelas, received great appreciation from both critics and the public. During the same period, he proved his versatility with his contributions to the anthology series Brava Gente. Lund, who has also undertaken international projects, took part in the international anthology film Les enfants invisibles, which premiered at the 2005 Venice Film Festival. Focusing on the difficulties experienced by children in different geographies of the world, this co-production was a powerful example of how Lund could translate its local experiences into a universal humanitarian language. Continuing to produce in different formats in the following years, Lund maintained its existence and productivity with projects such as (fdp), as well as current productions such as 2025's A Mulher da Casa Abandonada. Kátia Lund's career paints a portrait of a director who brings Brazil's social fabric to cinema with both compassion and courage.
