Barry Jenkins
Details

Raised in the Liberty City neighborhood of Miami, Florida, Barry Jenkins is recognized worldwide today as one of the most distinctive voices of American independent cinema. This journey from a small town to the top of Hollywood has left deep traces both in the stories he tells and in the way he tells these stories. Jenkins began to gain attention in 2008 with his first feature film, Medicine for Melancholy. This low-budget production, set in San Francisco, attracted serious attention in independent cinema circles and demonstrated Jenkins' command of the visual language at an early age. The real big leap came in 2016: Moonlight received an extraordinary response from both critics and the awards world. This film, which tells the search for identity of a black and gay teenager growing up in the poor neighborhoods of Florida, won the Best Motion Picture Drama award at the 74th Golden Globe. Jenkins also won Best Adapted Screenplay for Moonlight at the 89th Academy Awards; The film made history by winning multiple Oscars, including Best Picture, at this ceremony. In his next big project, Jenkins brought a story with high emotional intensity to the big screen with If the Streets Had a Language, adapted from James Baldwin's powerful novel. This 1970s-era tale of love and justice, set in College Park, Georgia, once again proved his mastery of storytelling. In the television world, he turned Colson Whitehead's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel into a visual poem with the Underground Railroad mini-series he created for Amazon Prime. The series was highly appreciated by both critics and audiences. In 2024, Jenkins appealed to a much wider audience with Mufasa: The Lion King, which he added to Disney's beloved Lion King universe, and demonstrated his ability to keep commercial cinema and artistic depth together. He continues his career as one of the rare directors who can create strong works from both small-budget independent films and large studio productions.
