There is a story that takes shape in the backstreets of London, in bars filled with tobacco smoke, and deep within those suffocating rooms where cards are dealt on tables. Guy Ritchie threw a grenade into cinema with his first feature-length film in 1998, permanently changing the face of British crime films. Although this story revolving around four young men seems to start with an ordinary gambling night, it soon turns into a vortex in which complex, intertwined events dance strange and crazy. Eddy and his friends lose everything they had overnight; moreover, they end up owing much more than they lost. It looks like the beginning of a lot of crime movies so far, doesn't it? But Ritchie's genius manifests itself precisely at this point. Because this film is less about the story of people trying to save the situation and more about watching a chain reaction of out-of-control dominoes fall. The script, woven with stories that are unaware of each other, unexpected connections and a unique sense of humor, almost does not give the audience an opportunity to breathe. The film expertly walks the fine line between comedy and suspense; it can sometimes make you laugh and sometimes keep you on the edge of your seat. For those who want to see the purest form of British dark humor, this film has become a go-to reference source. Every scene in which Vinnie Jones appears on the screen is loaded with a different charisma, while Jason Statham and the other actors make you feel the British street culture of that era to the core. The entire cast naturally seizes the opportunities presented by the script as a whole. Ritchie's dynamic sense of editing, stylized but never artificial visual language, and music choices that capture the spirit of the time take the film far beyond an ordinary crime comedy. Bullets ready to be fired from an antique rifle, money in the wrong hands, and people in the wrong place at the wrong time... When all of these come together, the result is the most entertaining chaos in the history of cinema. Not appreciating what one has is sometimes the greatest misfortune; sometimes it is enough to open the door to unexpected salvation.

Far from being a good movie, with tons of flaws but already pointing to the pattern of the whole Ritchie's filmography.

Genuinely one of my favorite movies of all time. Watched again recently and realised how well written, brilliantly shot, beautifully cast and cleverly produced this movie actually is!

The very entertaining ending makes this film. I wasn't sure about <em>'Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels'</em> up until that point. Like, don't get me wrong, it is a good film from the get-go but I wasn't personally convinced by it to be more than that until the credits rolled - at which point, I found myself to have been thoroughly entertained. With Guy Ritchie in his directing debut and a whole host of familiar British faces, it isn't a difficult film to get into. I did feel at some po...
