The Conjuring: Last Rites
Details
Over the years, Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga have become so synonymous with the characters of Ed and Lorraine Warren that seeing them together on screen now evokes a distinct feeling. Accompanying them feels like being part of a deep-rooted horror universe. This film, the fourth and likely final installment in the series, both honors that feeling and makes its weight felt. Directed by Michael Chaves, the production uses 1980s Pennsylvania as its setting. The dense, enclosed atmosphere of the era seems to permeate the spaces; narrow corridors, dim lighting, and an unexpected darkness that forms around a wedding. The story draws the viewer into an unsettling reality hidden beneath an apparently ordinary celebration. Religious rituals, mirrors, ghosts, and demonic entities are familiar elements of the series, but this time they are explored on a much more personal level. In this adventure of the Warrens, which can be considered their "final case," they confront not only an external demon but also internal costs. The couple's confrontation with their own vulnerabilities, having protected people from evil forces for years, adds emotional depth to the film. In addition to the pure horror elements, this human dimension elevates the film beyond a mere ghost movie. The fresh energy brought to the series by young actors like Ben Hardy and Mia Tomlinson is balanced by the masterful acting of Farmiga and Wilson. Rebecca Calder, on the other hand, manages to leave a strange uneasiness in the audience whenever she enters the stage. The script follows a predictable path at times because it remains faithful to the series' formula, which can be criticized. However, Chaves' camera work and the production's attention to sound keep the atmosphere alive. The silences, the whispers, and the sudden loss of balance keep the viewer constantly on edge. It's not easy to open the final door of a horror universe. This film pushes that door open with both respect and courage. For those who are devoted to the series, it serves as an emotional conclusion; for new viewers, it sparks curiosity that will bring you back to the beginning.

Oh well, all good things must come to an end - except, well, this isn’t really very good. It’s reminiscent of the second Enfield Haunting one (2016) as the Smurl family start to find their home is being terrorised by a spirit that this time has been malevolently lingering on the land that their new home has been built on. Initially, the Warrens (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) are reluctant to get involved, but when a priest is found dangling down the stairwell of the bishop’s residence and the...

Intro is beautifully done and the daughter after her confirmation nearly broke me. Much more family trauma to this than the previous films. Hauntingly exemplary in the timing of the jump scares, and this is just the first 30 minutes in. Imagine a gift that keeps giving, but in the worst possible way. In the 40+ years of being engrossed with watching any and as many movies as possible, this one has the most heart tugging feeling I've ever felt in a horror film. Tremendous effort went into this pr...

"The Conjuring: Last Rites" will divide audiences with some people irritated by the fact there is too much talking going on and it takes too long to get around to the excellent special effects extravaganza everyone wants to see while other people will relish the slow build coupled with the Smurl family dynamics which are great fun to watch. In any case the film will certainly make you sit up and take notice and not just because of ceiling fixtures being ripped out or the levitation and beating o...
