Imagine a town in northeastern Mexico, just a stone's throw from the U.S. border. Matamoros. It is a place where poverty, violence and despair are so internalized that children learn what not to expect rather than learning what to expect from life at the elementary school. Christopher Zalla's 2023 film tells about something that blooms in the midst of darkness rooted in this very soil: the transformative effect Tuesday of a real teacher on real children. Eugenio Derbez delivers perhaps the most mature and profound performance of his career in this film. The character she plays goes far beyond the usual "inspirational teacher" stereotype. A man who refuses to conform to the system, who sees questions as more valuable than answers, and who opens doors to children's minds. However, no matter how beautiful this journey may be, the price of that beauty is too heavy. The film makes the viewer question again what education means. Is it to give information to a child, or to teach him to trust his own mind? Breaking down the walls of the standard curriculum and prioritizing curiosity is becoming almost a revolutionary act in this town. Instead of forcing this idea into a didactic narrative, Zalla brings it to life through the characters' eyes, their silences, and small but precious moments. The young actors, on the other hand, are the real driving force behind the film's spirit. Names like Daniel Haddad and Mia Fernanda Solis display such a natural and real posture in front of the camera that it becomes difficult to distinguish fiction from reality while watching. Each of these children carries a different burden; the depth of the film largely stems from making these burdens silently visible. The cinematography, which conveys the weariness and atmosphere of border towns to the screen, perfectly supports the film's emotional tone. The narrative neither veers into excessive emotionality nor maintains a cold distance; it moves right in the middle, along that delicate, trembling line of truth. The film, rated 8.3 on TMDB, created a significant impact at festivals and garnered extraordinary devotion from audiences. It offers a kind of experience that never welcomes with its duration of more than two hours, on the contrary, something accumulates in every scene, and you can't easily fill the silence it leaves inside you when it's over.

To inspire better results, the teachers are offered bonuses if their pupils can improve, so imagine their chagrin when "Sergio" starts upturning tables and using the school's water reservoir to i...

The most significant revolutions often begin with one individual, eventually leading to a transformation within an entire community. "Radical," inspired by a true story, embodies this journey, enriched by scientific and philosophical insights that bring hope and inspiration to a world that feels bleak and challenging. The film draws parallels to the beloved classic "Dead Poets Society," with Sergio stepping into the role of a modern-day Prof. Keating in a remarkable classroom setting. He dares t...

Radical (2023) Directed by Christopher Zalla William T. Harris, US Commissioner of Education from 1889 to 1906, said, and believed: "Ninety-nine [students] out of a hundred are automata, careful to walk in prescribed paths, careful to follow the prescribed custom. This is not an accident but the result of substantial education." Sadly, though this attitude may have served the purpose of feeding the industrial revolution with unfettered parents to work in sweatshops, this mode of education ...
