This dark tale of passion, by Louis Malle, coldly examines humanity's capacity to drive itself to destruction. this 1992 film tells about the capsizing of a man in the middle of his life at the most unexpected moment; how reasoning, morality and self-protection can be shattered. However, while doing this, it neither descends into melodrama nor makes hasty judgments. Jeremy Irons portrays a figure who embodies everything socially desirable: a respected, successful politician leading an apparently balanced life. But when we encounter the indescribable gravitational force embedded in Juliette Binoche's body language and gaze, we see how fragile this outwardly smooth structure is. The woman played by Binoche is not a "femme fatale" in the classical sense; rather, she does not fit into that category. What is truly dangerous is not so much its very existence as how this existence unleashes everything repressed within the man. Malle weaves his narrative in deliberately slow and unsettling fashion. Many directors could easily escape to sensation with this material. Yet here, the camera maintains distance and coldness; it connects the viewer to the relationship not with warm empathy, but with an almost voyeuristic discomfort. This distance is also one of the film's strongest aspects. The story's backdrop is London in the period and Tory politics; an atmosphere where status, appearance, and reputation come first. This context transforms the experienced devastation into not only an individual but also a class-based and societal collapse. The wife character, played by Miranda Richardson, establishes such dominance over the scenes in the film's final section that the entire film feels like a river flowing towards that moment. It doesn't offer a sweet, heartwarming love story to the death. On the contrary, it asks how destructive and inevitable passion can be, and how often conscience fails to kick in in time. Not for those who are looking for a comfortable viewing experience; but for those who want to think about human weakness, the blindness of desire and how a life can suddenly change, it is a production that leaves deep traces.

Harrowing movie, Juliette Binoche and Jeremy Irons have great chemistry. It’s a very ‘arty’ film . But it leaves you feeling queasy when you realize the consequences. Good show!

Jeremy Irons is a happily married (to Miranda Richardson) British government minister who meets his usually quite rakish son's (Rupert Graves) latest girlfriend (Juliette Binoche). The two click immediately - and soon they are doing a lot more than just clicking. That's about it - they carry out their clandestine liaison with all it's concomitant risks and thrills before an ending that I really thought underwhelming. This is one of the frequently wooden Irons' better efforts, Graves still has hi...
