Set in the foggy London of the nineteenth century, this story is an exploration not only of the art of magic, but also of the darkest corners of human nature. Christopher Nolan confronts the audience not with stage deceptions, but with a much deeper illusion: the illusion of an obsession strong enough to lead a person to destruction. Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale portray two rivals who both feed off and gnaw at each other. The conflict between the two magicians, although it may seem like a superficial rivalry story, actually unfolds on a much more fragile ground. How the pain of loss feeds on hatred and turns into a way of life, when chasing a dream dehumanizes a person — the film is deeply engaged in these questions. Every fake trick, every magic show, becomes a metaphor for an existential crisis growing behind the scenes. Nolan's narrative structure here is not merely a choice but an integral tool woven into the essence of the film. Through nonlinear time structure, diaries, and nested perspectives, the viewer is drawn into the characters' own mental labyrinths. When you think you've seen the truth, you realize you've gone one step deeper. The structural similarity that the film establishes with the wizarding trilogy — preparation, illusion and prestige — reveals that it carries an almost eerie rigor when you look back after watching it. Michael Caine takes on a role positioned as the audience's conscience and common sense, while Scarlett Johansson and Rebecca Hall represent the female experience reflected in male egos standing on the brink of darkness in a quiet but powerful way. The moment when Nikola Tesla is included in the story takes the film to a scientific dimension; it invites the viewer to that strange region where the boundary between reality and fiction is deliberately blurred. Dec. Prestige is one of those rare works that manages to both satisfy and deeply disturb you in its finale. Many films end when they finish; this film begins anew when it ends. Because even after seeing everything, you can't help but question once again what you actually saw.

Perplexed by the storyline at the beginning, deeply attracted to the narratives of the intense rivalry between two actors in the main body of the show, and finally shocked by the revealed truth, or *The Prestige* in the end. This is one of the most mind-blowing mysteries that I've watched in recent years. One of the best part, I think, is how the characters of two young magicians are depicted -- through small but noticeable details like the facial expressions, one or two words, the novels et ...

There is great entertainment in seeing the two fellow-rivals battling each other, but it is only after the final twist that the viewer realises the entire film is a magic trick, a prestige, itself. 10/10

Nolan should make more period dramas.

<em>'The Prestige'</em> is tremendous! An expertly made movie about magic, one that lasts just over two hours but it is most definitely 120mins+ well spent. I was sold by the whole vibe of it from the very beginning, sometimes you can just tell you're going to absolutely enjoy something from the opening minutes and this, for me, was one of those films. The casting is terrific, many well known faces appear. Hugh Jackman, Michael Caine (how about that speech), Christian Bale and Scarlett Joh...

As ever with Christopher Nolan films the chronology needs close attention - as so many of the clues as to what the hell is actually going on require a considerable degree of concentration (and multiple viewings) before any semblance of quality emanates from the outwardly cluttered and, frankly, preposterous plot. We start with Christian Bale ("Borden") about to swing for the murder of Hugh Jackman ("Angier") but of course it is not that simple; and through a series of complex flashbacks we disco...
