Blind Love
Details

Loss is not always experienced visibly. Sometimes the deepest wounds grow silently, out of sight, and emerge unexpectedly years later. This film, which has recently become one of the works of Taiwanese cinema that has attracted increasing attention at world festivals, confronts exactly this fact: Decaying traces of the past that are buried but never die. The narrative, which begins with the story of a couple, initially appears to be an ordinary and familiar slice of life. However, with the news of pregnancy, this apparent balance begins to shift. This moment, which was expected to be the harbinger of a new life, on the contrary, opens old doors and unlocks long-sealed rooms. It is both eerie and extremely human to observe how a person cringes when joy and fear, hope and trauma try to exist in the same body at the same time. Director Zhou Meiyu examines the vulnerabilities within the family without resorting to melodrama. This cautious yet determined narrative style felt throughout the film aligns with the subtle psychological observation tradition of Taiwanese literature. This story, which has been transferred from a novel to the cinema, seems to manage to preserve the spirit of the original while transferring it to the visual language, because its tempo carries a caution that respects the inner world of the characters. The cast, led by Lin Yizhen, delivers multi-layered performances required to carry this emotional burden. The characters express themselves not through words, but through their silence, their looks, and the moments they avoid. This choice further intensifies the film's emotional impact and transforms the viewer from a passive spectator into an almost witness. This story, in which the concept of family is questioned rather than idealized, and romance is measured not only by being together, but also by how to exist together, does not hesitate to ask uncomfortable questions. Shining a light into a dark room doesn't always reveal beautiful things; but whatever has been ignored will eventually remind itself in some way. The film does exactly that: it forces us to look where we avoid looking.
