Those familiar with Michel Franco's cinema know how fragile the ground on which comfort rests is in his narratives. Subtitled "Sueños" in Spanish, that is, "Dreams", this film also asks how dreams and desires can both save and destroy a person, but it does so with a thriller that goes far beyond a classic love story. The story is based on the collision of two different worlds. On the one hand, a young dancer who puts everything on the stage to exist, devotes her body and will to art; on the other hand, a woman who is trying to breathe in a seemingly perfect, carefully arranged life. Although the relationship between these two characters initially seems to be shaped by a mutual promise of salvation, Franco skillfully weaves the tensions beneath the surface. While one is running towards their dreams, the other is calculating what those dreams will cost them in terms of reality. Jessica Chastain delivers a performance in this role that embodies both resilience and vulnerability simultaneously. She carries the tension between the cool-headed elegance her character presents to the outside world and the chaos growing within her, in her face, her posture, and her silences. Isaac Hernández, who is a ballet dancer in real life, draws attention on stage as a figure who dominates his body but cannot control the flow of life. Franco's directorial approach is also decisive here. It has a minimalist yet economical narrative pace; the silences are filled with meaning, the gazes are expressive, and the dialogues are limited. The film directs the viewer to small but impactful moments instead of grand revelations. The line between romance and suspense is becoming increasingly blurred; questions like "Is this love, or control? Protection or confinement?" remain unanswered. Critics may have found the film controversial, the scores may have been watched in the middle, but Franco's work gives the impression that it was made not to be easily digested, but to be thought about for a long time. For those who want to ask about the balance of power in human relationships, what sacrifice really means, and how dreams can turn into a weapon on behalf of someone else, this movie fills 98 minutes with the kind of questions that continue to live in your head afterwards.
