Los Angeles has been one of the most productive cities in the history of cinema, but Bart Layton this time examines one of the dark veins under the bright surface of the city, the fascinating world of jewel theft. Layton, who Decently plays the border between documentary and fiction with the American Ghost, Decamps completely to fiction this time and has an extremely striking material in his hands: Donald Westlake's novel, which is considered one of the classics of crime literature. The heart of the film is built on two contrasting figures. On the one hand, there is Lou Lubesnick, a tired, middle-aged detective brought to life by Mark Ruffalo; a pragmatic man who bears the scars of divorce, is angry with the system, but blindly trusts his intuition. On the other hand, Chris Hemsworth's character is a friendly, elegant, and highly disciplined lone wolf. This character reverses the classic Hollywood thief archetype; he is so tightly bound to the rules, using his charisma as a weapon, that this devotion paradoxically makes him free. Layton builds tension not solely through action, but through an intellectual chess game where two minds outsmart each other. Jewelry, police cars and motorcycle chases fill the background, but the main Deconfliction takes place between the intuitive stubbornness of the detective and the cold-blooded recklessness of the thief. Halle Berry and Barry Keoghan, on the other hand, bring to life characters who revolve around these two poles, both disrupting the balance and complicating the equation. This story, from the diamonds of Antwerp to the streets of Los Angeles, offers much more than just a chase. It knows the codes of crime cinema we love, but it doesn't submit to them. While making the viewer ask the question "who will be caught, who will escape" on the one hand, he whispers a much more strange and disturbing question on the other hand: What kind of freedom does someone who plays the rules perfectly actually experience? This production, in which Nick Nolte has also joined the cast, looks set to secure a significant place among crime films of 2026. It takes a great balance to keep both the Decadent pace of the genre and the depth of the character drama together, and seeing how far Layton carries this balance is a strong enough reason to watch the film.

By balancing the tension of expert editing with the humanity of its pe...

“Davis” (Chris Hemsworth) is one of those rare breeds of thieves. He has scruples about violence and so always wants to avoid hurting those whom he robs. It’s a sound policy as usually it is the couriers he is relieving of their diamonds, or watches, or jewels. His latest job didn’t quite go to plan, though, and feeling a bit unnerved he tells his ageing fence “Money” (Nick Nolte) that he wants out. He's not the kind of man to let the job go unfinished, so drafts in his far less scrupulous pal “...

The aptly named "Crime 101" looks a lot like any by the numbers entry-level script for an action crime drama/thriller. There's exactly nothing new on offer here. Unless you are 100% new to the genre, this film will feel overly familiar, tired, predictable and ultimately clichéd. Dropping in a cast of well-known faces does nothing to fix the lack of originality on offer here. I managed a little over half of this flick before remembering I only had one life and didn't want to waste it watch...

It’s been said that crime doesn’t pay, but, as this notion is often portrayed in the movies, that’s only true if one gets caught. Perpetrators skilled in covering their tracks frequently manage to find a way around the law, provided, of course, that they’re truly adept at managing to stay ahead of authorities. That theory gets seriously put to the test in this third feature outing from writer-director Bart Layton, the story of a slick, enigmatic, unassuming Los Angeles jewel thief (Chris Hemswor...
