The story of a pianist who survived a traffic accident and took refuge in a stranger's house in the countryside may seem like a familiar story of salvation at first glance. However, this film, written by Christian Petzold, expertly subverts that familiarity and brings the viewer to the brink of a much deeper inner reckoning. The cold yet enchanting atmosphere that has become the signature of Petzold Cinema is felt here as well. In the dim light of the French countryside, in a large and quiet house, the bond that is gradually being knitted between two Decoupled women forms the real backbone of the film. These two figures, one living in the shadow of a physical concussion, the other in the shadow of a much older and gnawing destruction, become both a burden and a refuge for each other. The tension between them never explodes; it builds up silently, almost musical in nature. The weight carried by the piyanizm throughout the film cannot be overlooked either. Music is not an abstract ornament here; it is a symbol of what the character both loses and strives to find again. The relationship your fingers establish with the keyboard functions as a reflection of your relationship with life. Paula Beer once again successfully portrays that fragile yet resilient woman who has become an indispensable figure in Petzold's filmography. Barbara Auer, on the other hand, adds such a layered depth to the host character that hints about her past are revealed one by one and carefully throughout the film; she is never hasty. At the end of the film, when all those Deceptions, those unfinished sentences and the tears that flow unnoticed come together, the viewer finds himself somewhere in that big house, in the middle of that silence. These 86 minutes, which remind us what a difficult but necessary process it is to face loss, make peace with the past and exist again, are not the kind to be watched in a hurry.

For what it’s worth, some movies are just plain forgettable. That’s especially true when a picture’s narrative is driven by a slew of ambiguities, leaving viewers wondering what the film is actually about. And that approach, for whatever purpose it supposedly serves, characterizes many of the works of writer-director Christian Petzold, who employs it once again in his latest offering. Laura (Paula Beer), a listless, ostensibly withdrawn music student at a Berlin university, embarks on a weekend ...
