Normal
Details
In a remote corner of Minnesota, in a small town where snow covers everything, everyone knows each other, an ordinary-looking sheriff's mission begins to deepen in unexpected ways. In this thriller directed by Ben Wheatley, the bank robbery faced by the sheriff, who came to town as a temporary assignment, is actually just the visible face of a much larger and much darker structure. Learning that Bob Odenkirk is in the lead role provides an important clue for mentally setting the tone of the film. This actor, who has proven himself with Better Call Saul, possesses a rare skill in portraying characters who appear ordinary on the surface but harbor inner turmoil. The presence of strong names like Henry Winkler and Lena Headey alongside him gives indications of the film's depth in terms of cast. Headey's presence, especially in such darkly atmospheric structures, reminds the audience from the outset that nothing is superficial. Wheatley is known throughout his career as a director who pushes the boundaries of genres and loves unconventional narrative structures. His filmography, from *Kill List* to *High-Rise*, clearly demonstrates how much of a multi-layered cinematic language he has developed. It is inevitable to look for traces of this signature in Normal as well. The dynamics of small towns, corruption, hidden interests and the process of noticing this rottenness by an outsider's eye have the potential to go beyond a mere crime story in Wheatley's hands. The word "Normal", which is the title of the film, is also thought-provoking on its own. Is it the name of the town, or an interpretation of the way things are taken for granted there? This question constantly lingers in the audience's minds throughout the 91-minute duration. The deeply entrenched structures of silent power in small communities create tension that contrasts with the apparent tranquility of the town. The structure, which combines elements of action, crime, and suspense, promises an atmosphere that rewards careful viewing, not one for quick consumption. The gloomy realities that are gradually revealed from a seemingly ordinary assignment leave the audience facing both curiosity and an uncomfortable feeling of familiarity.

Normal is a flawed action film, but it uses its basic concept effectively. Its throwaway characters are used to a kick ass and bullet-heavy advantage while the action is swift, brutal, and doesn’t overstay its welcome. This is a bite-sized action film that delivers unabbreviated destruction. https://bit.ly/BobNormal

I thought there something of the "Twin Peaks" about this as a temporary sheriff arrives in the town of Normal for a short stint following the untimely death of his predecessor. "Ulysses" (Bob Odenkirk) is about as laid back as a man can get, and so expects to do little in the sleepy town aside from settle squabbles between shopkeepers and listen to his deputy's squeaky leather jacket. Then the alarm in the bank goes off. Surely it's not being robbed? Anyway, his entire force race to the scene on...

Enjoyable and refreshing. There's a lot of police movie tropes that people revert to when writing their scripts. There's a certain amount of side characters, plots and twists you can introduce. This movie does something interesting with all of that and while the execution isn't flawless, it's still a very entertaining movie and its casting is phenomenal. Parts of the movie are unbecomingly dark, which takes away from the action on screen as you simply cannot observe it. Other than that, I thin...

“Normal” feels like a self‑conscious ‘woke’ spin on the modern action thriller, and for me that’s where it completely loses the plot. It plays as a politically one‑sided, ideologically heavy‑handed shoot‑’em‑up that’s more interested in attitude and messaging than in building believable characters or a coherent story. Asian yakuza are mostly reduced to stereotyped cannon fodder, while other characters are framed as more complex and sympathetic, which gives the violence a racially tone‑deaf, hypo...
