A woman who has lost her memory is found inside a dark cargo container. They don't know who it is, they don't know how it got there, they don't know who put it there. This simple yet powerful premise transforms into a cold and bleak atmosphere of tension in the hands of Spanish director Gabe Ibáñez. Based on a novel, The Anonymous Woman does not use loss of identity only as a narrative tool; she makes you question how fragile memory is, how a person can only exist with his past. The woman pulled out of the container is a living puzzle in the hands of two detectives. Will saving her or finding out who she is come first? And when these two goals begin to conflict with each other, the film reveals its true character. Candela Peña portrays this mysterious woman struggling with memory loss in an introverted and cautious performance. That blank yet searching look in her eyes dominates the scene for a long time. The detectives, played by Ana Rujas and Manolo Solo, form the backbone of the story as characters who drive the dynamic of the investigation. It can be said that the team is generally well-balanced and in a harmonious, complementary relationship. Ibáñez gives the impression of a director who is selective about his visual language. Cold color palettes, sultry interiors and a framing style that at times gives a claustrophobic feeling, draw the viewer into an ambiguity that matches the character's mood. The film's blend of crime and thriller elements creates an atmosphere that remains largely vibrant, although the pace fluctuates at times. Although it can be anticipated that some viewers may find the narrative pace slow, the film does not exhaust the sense of curiosity too early. The question "Who is this woman?" remains unanswered until the final act, and this unansweredness feels like a deliberate choice. A simple but engaging production that those who love the thriller genre, especially those who are interested in stories where the concepts of identity, memory and threat are intertwined, can watch comfortably.
