What is it like to get lost in the backstreets of London? It is not merely a physical condemnation, but a mental and emotional collapse—that strange cycle in which one sinks deeper while running away from oneself. This film, Harris Dickinson's first feature-length directorial effort, settles right into that dark space and refuses to emerge from it. This choice is both the boldest aspect of the film and the aspect that challenges the audience the most. Frank Dillane carefully avoids exaggeration while portraying the young man in the grip of addiction and homelessness. That fragile silence in her performance conveys the character's helplessness far more powerfully than words ever could. Even the expressionlessness on Dillane's face feels like a kind of scream; this is a rare kind of acting sensitivity. Dickinson builds her narrative on a balance that oscillates between realism and surrealism. London is not the city tourists see here; it is cold, indifferent, an organism that flows at its own rhythm and easily absorbs the individual's existence. The camera doesn't like this city; it shows it as it is. This approach not only darkens the film's atmosphere but also gives it a unique honesty. The narrative framed as a healing story becomes much more complex over time. The offered opportunity for redemption does not follow the expected path; on the contrary, it leaves the character and the audience grappling with entirely different, unsettling questions. This blurred boundary between hope and despair constitutes the most intriguing aspect of the film. The supporting characters, enriched by contributions from names like Megan Northam and Amr Waked, offer small but impactful moments that feed into the main story. Instead of instrumentalizing these characters, the film gives each of them genuine weight. The slow and measured pace of narration can be challenging for an impatient audience. But for those who immerse themselves in this trip, The Tramp turns into a provocatively quiet experience that questions what lies beneath the surface of addiction and loss. Although Dickinson's voice as a director is still taking shape, it's clear he has something to say in this film.

“Mike” (Frank Dillane) isn’t a bad man, he’s just an addict, down on his luck and living on the streets of an unforgiving London. The social services manage to find him a room in an hostel and even a job washing dishes at an hotel restaurant, but his path to the straight and narrow is anything but yellow-bricked and with temptation never far away and his frustrations made worse by his new relationship with a colleague who only seems to manage to make matters worse, things are not looking rosy. Homelessness and drug addiction are serious social and public health issues that have no easy answers, especially for those experiencing them. Moreover, despite compassion-based government and charitable programs aimed at addressing these problems, many in society at large are unsympathetic to those seeking to overcome these circumstances, making their recovery doubly difficult. Winning over supporters to these causes can thus be an uphill battle, but one way of doing so is depicting the harrowi...
