Spirited Away
Details
This masterpiece, which Hayao Miyazaki brought to life in 2001, is not just a child's adventure story; it is a profound poem of innocence, belonging and selfhood that is gradually disappearing in the modern world. Ten-year-old Chihiro is an ordinary child, restless and a bit sullen. Moving to the new city has made him unhappy; he is not yet ready to face what he has lost. But Miyazaki pushes him over a threshold before he's ready. That tunnel is a transit point, a thin curtain Decoupled between the two worlds. And once crossed, turning back will not be easy at all. As the film progresses, it takes on the colorful tapestry of Japanese mythology and folk culture. Frequented by spirits, this mysterious bathhouse is filled with yōkai, gods, scary wizards and kindness hiding in unexpected places. Miyazaki does not rely on any fantasy clichés when building this world; every entity and every setting he creates operates according to its own unique logic. When the audience steps into this universe, they don't fully know the rules, but they sense them. Like Chihiro felt: helpless, alone, yet curious. The film's real strength lies in its focus on character, not magic. Chihiro changes throughout the story; this change comes neither by force nor through a dramatic rupture, but quietly, while working or helping others. The struggle to protect one's identity asks a universal question that touches the audience with the same depth at all ages: how much can you give up on yourself, protecting yourself anyway? The visual language, on the other hand, unfolds with breathtaking richness. Every frame integrated with Joe Hisaishi's music is both sad and full of hope. At times it conveys childlike joy, at times it conveys indescribable loneliness. Crowned with the Golden Bear and the Academy Award at the Berlin Film Festival, this film has once again proved that animation is not a children's entertainment, but one of the most powerful forms of art. When Chihiro's journey ends, the viewer often realizes that something has changed within themselves. This feeling is difficult to describe; but just watching is enough to experience it.

One of the great "masters" of the anime art. Somehow, if I would personally associate "Akira" to "self-destruction", then this anime would be the opposite :)

I quite liked the look of the new house that "Chihiro" and her parents were to move to, but she isn't so keen, and being ten had the weight of the world on her shoulders. En route to meet the removal men, her dad takes a wrong turning and soon, together with her mum, end up at the end of a tunnel. What would you do? Go in of course! Luckily it's quite a short walk before they find themselves in a small village that's full of shops all laid out for a banquet. Mum and dad tuck in but the young gir...
