What would it feel like to get lost in the labyrinthine corridors of Russian politics? This ambitious production, directed by Olivier Assayas, asks exactly that question and then leaves the audience in an uncomfortably beautiful limbo. Based on the novel of the same name by Giuliano da Empoli, the film examines the mechanisms of power that shaped Russia during the most turbulent period of history, from the collapse of the Soviets to the present day. But it doesn't tell this story as a dry political chronicle; it tells it through the eyes of a person caught between betrayal, loyalty, and conscience. The character, played by Paul Dano, brings to the screen how being near power transforms a person, in a way that makes the magician question whether he is also fascinated at some point. Assayas goes far beyond the usual period drama in this film. It creates a global texture by intertwining the increasingly harsh climate of the 2000s and 2010s from the chaotic Moscow of the 1990s with the bright cold of Western metropolises such as London and Stockholm. A black humor also seeps into the work when visualizing how capitalism has infiltrated Eastern Europe, how idealism bargains with the ambition for power, and how history itself is prone to a fictional narrative. This subtle satire is one of the sharpest elements that saves the film from mediocrity. The presence of Jude Law and Alicia Vikander adds both weight and multi-layered tension to the narrative. Jeffrey Wright's brief but shocking scenes upend the film's moral universe with sudden jolts. The fact that the cast was chosen with such deliberate care is the clearest sign that this production is not merely a biographical reenactment. For 136 minutes, the viewer must remain constantly alert to avoid falling into a false sense of security. Assayas makes us feel that there is always another layer behind what we see; he speaks not only to what is said but also to what is unspoken. There are few films that so boldly place Russia's recent history and the figure of Vladimir Putin at the center of a fictional narrative. Therefore, The Sorcerer of the Kremlin is not only a cinematic but also a political document of courage.

I suppose to be fair to Paul Dano, he does have something of the look of an apparatchik to him, but otherwise he really fails to deliver anything of the complexities or menace in this depiction of the rise of Vladimir Putin. OK, so Jude Law doesn't exactly convince in that latter role, either, but at least he does resemble his man! "Vadim" (Dano) is an aspiring film-maker of no great skill who ends up working as a television producer just as Boris Yeltsin is beginning to lose his grip. His benef...

Political leaders often don’t rise to that level of power without the strategic scripting concocted for them by the little-known kingmakers behind them. And that’s what this fact-based, though satirically fictional, political thriller about the rise of Russian president Vladimir Putin (Jude Law) seeks to chronicle. The film tells the story of professional political fixer Vadim Baranov (Paul Dano), who rises from art school student to television producer to “the Czar’s” righthand man, doing whate...
