Instead of suddenly escalating the tension, Sokolov builds it up in layers; he slowly, almost imperceptibly, pulls the viewer out of their comfort zone. The sibling relationship between Zazie Beetz and Myha is both the emotional anchor and the most fragile point of the film. The complex family dynamic that the two female actors bring to the screen saves the struggle for survival from turning into an abstract action sequence; it makes every danger feel personal and burning. Patricia Arquette and Paterson Joseph, on the other hand, represent the more sinister layers of this world; in each scene they remind that something is not being said, something is being hidden.
