Details
A child lost deep in the Egyptian desert returns after eight years in an inexplicable manner. But this return opens a much darker door beyond the expected reunion. Lee Cronin skillfully blends ancient evil with a modern family tragedy, bringing the sharp and bold narrative language he brought to horror cinema with Evil Dead Rise to a much wider canvas this time. In Kronin's hands, the Mummy story does not turn into a clichéd period adventure; on the contrary, it drags the audience into a process of both emotional and existential inquiry. The disappearance, reunion and the inexplicable sequence of events that follow form the backbone of the film, not just out of fear, but out of a deeply felt sense of uncertainty and destruction. Lee Cronin’s The Mummy isn’t scary or memorable; it’s raunchy exploitation and over-orchestrated expired cheese. It is a horror film that reeks of nothing but ridiculousness. Partially entertaining possession flick. Going into it blind, I was expecting more focus on the mummy aspect of things, but that turned out to simply be a surface-level harness around a possession story, that is ditched as fast as it appeared.
