Blades of the Guardians
Details
This production, directed by the living legend of kung fu cinema Yuen Woo-ping, brings Biao Ren, the beloved series of the Chinese comic book world, to the screen. The film, centered around Wu Jing's powerful presence, expertly blends expansive desert landscapes with the atmosphere of a world steeped in history. Carrying the full weight of a historical epic, the story focuses on the dangerous and honorable world inhabited by paid protectors—the biaoren. These men embark on arduous journeys, taking their origins, backgrounds and consciences with them; each task turns into not only a delivery, but also a test of existence. The film's central question seems simple: Why does a man take up the sword? But the answer is far more complex than expected. Yuen Woo-ping presents his decades of experience as if it were a summary in this production. Choreography is not merely a spectacle; it serves as a means of expression that conveys the characters' inner worlds, power dynamics, and moral conflicts through bodily language. In the film, where names like Nicholas Tse, Yu Shi, and Chen Lijun spice up the cast, each character tries to come to life through their own voice. The fact that the cast is kept so strong indicates that the narrative is not left solely on the shoulders of a single hero; this is not a solo epic, but a collective saga. Its release on Chinese New Year is no coincidence. The film seeks to embody the traditional wuxia cinema tradition in modern production, carrying both nostalgia and fresh energy in this endeavor. The Deconstructed scenes inspired by the visual language of Manhuan sometimes feel like walking between the pages of a comic book; but this is not to underestimate the film, but reflects respect for its origin. The endless sands of the desert, the unrelenting sun, and people struggling to survive... Blades of the Guardians is not only an action extravaganza, but also brings to light humanity's inner questions about loyalty, identity, and the price of survival. The feeling it leaves in the audience is not only the admiration created by one breathtaking scene; it is that deep and disturbing question mark that lingers in the minds for a long time.

"Dao Ma" (Jing Wu) is quite merrily collecting bounties with his young friend "Xiao Qi" (Charles Ju) until he is summoned by a local governor with a proposition and subsequently, having killed the man, is forced to seek refuge amongst his friends in a remote mountain village. It is there that they ask him to return the favour by escorting "Zhi Shi Lang" (the unseen Sun Yizhou) - dressed in white robes and with a painted face mask akin to an harlequin, on a perilous journey across the Taklamakan....
