Some stories settle quietly inside a person and stay there for a long time. This film, inspired by John Davidson's real life, leaves exactly such an impression. In 1980s Scotland, you step into the world of a teenager who was diagnosed with Tourette syndrome at the age of fifteen, but this journey takes you much deeper than you think. The production, which came to life with the direction of Kirk Jones, realizes the danger of swimming in the cliched waters of an inspirational biography film and deftly avoids this trap. He uses both harsh and surprisingly gentle language to describe how Tourette syndrome was perceived in 1980s Britain, that is, how it was misunderstood, how it was stigmatized, and how this stigma was engraved on a child's psyche. This narrative, woven with dark Scottish humor, makes the audience laugh at times while at the same moment making them realize something is stuck in their throat. Robert Aramayo displays unexpected maturity in the lead role. It presents John neither as a hero nor as a victim; it portrays him as he is, with his contradictions, anger, and vulnerability. Experienced names like Maxine Peake and Peter Mullan, standing right next to them, lend their weight to every scene. This cast not only carries the emotional weight of the script; at times, they even deepen it. The film successfully recreates the atmosphere of the period spanning from the 1980s to the 1990s. While showing the social oppression, discrimination and the cost of being "different" in England and Scotland of those years, he does not caricature the spirit of the time. Instead, it makes you feel that atmosphere in a realistic and unsettling way. Based on exclusion, prejudice and a person's effort to find his own voice, this production presents the audience not only with the life of an individual, but also with a universal question about kindness: when people don't understand you, how do you approach them? While searching for the answer, it's not uncommon to find yourself lost in this story.

I suppose there are bound to be some questions about whether or not this is acting or mimicry, but there’s no denying that the performance here from Robert Aramayo is truly engaging to watch. John Davidson is a confident and friendly young man from Galashiels in the Scottish Borders who might have a promising goalkeeping career looming until, at the age of 14, he develops an involuntary tic. This is swiftly followed by uncontrollable swearing and spontaneously violent gestures. His parents, whos...

They say you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, because you just might be surprised by what’s inside. The same, of course, can be said for people, and that’s especially true when it comes to individuals with the rare and unusual condition known as Tourette Syndrome. And that’s precisely the point driven home by this excellent new fact-based comedy-drama from writer-director Kirk Jones. For those unfamiliar with Tourette, it’s a condition in which those affected exhibit potentially offensive an...
