Obsession

How strange paths can unrequited love lead a person down? Directed by Curry Barker, this independent production answers this question in a way that is both chilling and thought-provoking. Bringing together the naïve and the dangerous aspects of romanticism, the film draws on the tradition of folk horror to construct a modern tale of curse. At the center of the story is a desperate romantic. Someone who couldn't attract the attention of the woman he loved, tried every possible way, and faced disappointment every time. But this time, the opportunity that presents itself is entirely different; a mysterious, ancient willow tree and a single wish that comes with it. The moment they express their wish, everything changes and their desire truly comes true. However, behind everything that seems to have been achieved lies a price that must be paid. Obsession carefully avoids being an ordinary supernatural horror film. The heaviness felt in the film stems not only from the presence of creatures or dark forces, but also from the character's inner world. The psychological horror and the folkloric atmosphere distilled from folk legends intertwine here. The real tension begins when the viewer realizes they are watching the character's mental breakdown rather than the events on the screen. The chemistry between Michael Johnston and Inde Navarrette is the backbone that gives credibility to this dark tale. The film's dark comedy elements save the whole from monotony; in some scenes you can't help but smile, while in others you can't help but feel tense. Establishing this balance is not easy, and Barker's bridge between the script and the atmosphere constitutes one of the production's strongest aspects. Although the film is based on universal themes such as cursed objects, demons, and desire, it does not confine these to a clichéd framework. Rather, it invites you to question how obsession transforms the human mind and why the realization of a wish does not always mean a happy ending. Shaped by the freedom brought by the identity of independent production, this atmospheric thriller speaks to viewers who blend their fears with their thoughts rather than those who are looking for a comfortable viewing experience.

Curry Barker has crafted something mostly special for an almost non-existent budget. The story is compelling, the acting is solid, and Obsession feels like a breath of fresh air in comparison to similar horror films. However, it’s disappointing that one shrill character trait nearly ruins the entire film. It’s because of this that Obsession will have to settle for being a well-made, well-written film dominated by one aggressively irritating character, which will hinder future rewatches much like...

Make your wish and it will come true as surely as if it were rubbed out on that lamp of "Aladdin". Well he gives her a lift home, but their parting is a bit wobbly and so in a fit o...

Full Review: aisleseatreviews.com "Waking up in the middle of the night with the eerie sense that you’re being watched, only to look down and see your kid standing pitch-black next to your bed staring at you. That is the exact level of visceral dread this movie locks you into." Obsession is one of those rare, deeply unsettling horror films that doesn't just want to jump-scare you—it actively wants to get under your skin and suffocate you. You get about 15 minutes of relative safety at the ...

Obsession is an supernatural phychological horror film directed by Curry Barker, a youtuber turned filmmaker and what a crazy film he had made on a budget 1 million dollars. The concept itself is so interesting but terrifying at the same time that will make you think that why and how would Curry had come with such an idea. The film is so layered and deep in it's narrative that after watching the film every time you think about it, you will come across a new perspective and shade of every charact...

Curry Barker’s feature debut is a flawless, deeply unsettling masterpiece that takes the classic "be careful what you wish for" trope and turns it into a relentless nightmare. The film centers on a music store employee who uses a supernatural trinket to force his longtime crush to love him, unleashing a wave of horrifying, unhinged consequences. Visually striking and meticulously paced, the movie keeps you completely locked in from the opening frame to its devastating conclusion. What elevates ...
