Passenger

The caravan lifestyle, which has become a symbol of freedom, has gained significant appeal in recent years, both in the real world and in popular culture. Endless roads, uncertain destinations, and a horizon line instead of four walls... André Øvredal, on the other hand, takes this romantic image and fills it with darkness. The Norwegian director has previously proven his mastery of placing supernatural tension in ordinary spaces with works such as Trollhunter and Autopsy of Jane Doe; this time, that space is a caravan on the move. The story begins on a deserted road. A young couple encounters an unexpected event while in the midst of a journey that, from the outside, appears to be the embodiment of their dreams. Until that moment, everything was familiar, even almost peaceful. But Øvredal doesn't keep the viewer much in this comfort zone. After the accident scene, the film's tone gradually shifts; sunny, open roads transform into a closed-off, oppressive prison. The most impressive aspect of the film is that the threat is invisible. The entity called "Passenger" is not a physical monster; rather, it is conceived as a feeling, a shadow, a breathing presence inside the car. This choice takes the tension beyond visual shocks and creates psychological pressure. The viewer also feels trapped in that narrow space with the characters; every bend, every deserted gas station, every midnight stop feels like a harbinger of the next danger. The couple, played by Lou Llobell and Jacob Scipio, moves through believable tension without falling into the stereotypes of over-the-top heroes or helpless victims. The characters' relationships with each other are shaped by the backdrop of their struggle for survival, and this situation enriches the film's emotional fabric. Turning the vanlife aesthetic into a tool of horror is both a creative and bold choice. This contradiction between the feeling of freedom provided by the open road and the impossibility of escape forms the essence of the film. Although it is not the kind that will make you forget to breathe for ninety-four minutes, it will attract the attention of lovers of supernatural thrillers, especially those who carry the fear of being trapped in a closed space deep down.

"Tyler" (Jacob Scipio) and "Maddie" (Lou Llobell) are a young couple who have decided to abandon the urban rat-race. She has done some interior design work on their old van, and so the pair set off for a life on the road. To be fair, she is a little less convinced by the romance of this new lifestyle and that only gets worse when they witness a nasty road accident on their first night out. That's just the start of their horrors though as things quite literally start going bump in the night. Is t...

Passenger is a highly effective, incredibly tense supernatural thriller that breathes fresh, malevolent life into the road-trip horror subgenre, turning the concept of "van life" into a rolling prison of psychological dread. Director André Øvredal masterfully uses the cramped confines of a vehicle and the isolating darkness of the open road to build a slow-burn masterclass in atmospheric tension. The supernatural elements are handled with great restraint, relying heavily on deep shadows, sudd...
