Yeon Sang-ho is known as a director who loves to swim in the murky waters of Korean cinema. The name, which carries the zombie genre to a completely different dimension with Death on the Train, and then expands the boundaries of this universe with Peninsula, seems to have signed a much broader and multi-layered story with the Colony. This time, the narrative goes far beyond an individual struggle for survival; it examines the collapse of society, the rawest state of human nature and the fragility of collective existence. The name "Koloni" hints at something from the outset. The concept of a colony has both biological and social connotations; it is an order created by beings who move together, feed on each other, but at the same time consume each other. The film seems to have incorporated this double meaning into its entire structure. The zombie threat is not only a physical danger here, it is the embodiment of the reflexes, fears and prejudices that man has developed against his own species. Jeon Ji-hyun's presence on screen is undeniable. As one of the most charismatic female actors in Korean cinema, she exerts an irresistible charm that draws the audience in with every scene. The supporting cast is no less impressive; this lineup, featuring actors like Goo Kyo-hwan, Ji Chang-wook, and Go Soo, gives the film an epic feel. The dynamic between the characters goes far beyond that of a typical action film; each carries their own internal conflict, which intertwines with the external threat. Yeon Sang-ho's visual language has always been powerful: expansive shooting spaces, a steady rhythm amidst chaos, and a narrative structure that doses tension. It is inevitable to see this signature in Koloni as well. It is felt that an atmosphere was created that kept the audience tense for 122 minutes, and that scenes were designed where even taking a breath was a luxury. But the real question is: Is there really something being said beneath all this action and tension? When looking at Yeon Sang-ho's filmography, there are serious indications that the answer to this question is yes. Fear is a tool here; the real issue is what one chooses to be in a time of crisis.

Colony is a marginal departure from your classic zombie flick. While intelligently written, there's not a lot on offer here, aside from a zombie hive mind proposition, that distinguishes this outbreak zombie horror disaster drama from others in the genre. That's not to say it's not worth a look if you like this kind of thing. The acting is excellent; the characters have a genuine depth, offering up predictably human responses, for better or worse, to the unfolding disaster that befalls them. Act...
