La Grazia
Details
As one of the most original voices of Italian cinema, Paolo Sorrentino proves once again his mastery of intertwining both the personal and the political in every new film. the 2025 film La Grazia stands out as a work in which the director returns to his familiar universe of power, loneliness and existential reckoning, but this time he speaks in a more mature and calm voice. At the center of the film is an old and tired president. Forced to confront a deep void in both his public and private worlds as his term nears its end, this man is the kind of figure Sorrentino likes: the one who looks big from the outside, but decays from the inside. This portrait of a person, left in the cold and echoing silence of official corridors, gently questions the traces left by power and the accounting of a lifetime. Toni Servillo, having worked with Sorrentino many times, this unique actress carries the weight of the presidential office and its collapse on stage almost like a physical burden. Servillo's performance draws from those rare moments when what is unspoken carries far more meaning than what is said. The tension between the character's outward toughness and the silent devastation within him forms the emotional backbone of the film. Sorrentino's visual language operates in its distinctive way here as well. The vast palace spaces paradoxically visualize the character's inner constriction; official ceremonies and personal mourning coexist. The director is not allowing a political film to turn into a cold-blooded calculation exercise. On the contrary, it brings to the forefront the human helplessness, regret, and perhaps a kind of quest for salvation that lies behind bureaucratic decisions. La Grazia is a film that asks what the end of power looks like. When a leader withdraws from the public stage, what does he leave behind and what does he take with him? Where is the fine line between Deciphering and forgiving? Sorrentino presents these questions not with harsh answers, but with a trembling ambiguity. This one-hundred-and-thirteen-minute journey engages the viewer in both the end of an era and the universal human condition. One must sit quietly and watch; because that's exactly what the film demands.

Rilke once said about poetry and maturity that poetry is born not merely from early feelings but from deep, seasoned memories that have been absorbed into one's being, transforming into the essence of the poet's expression. Paolo Sorrentino's La Grazia is the kind of maturity Rilke was talking about, a film that could only be made by someone who has lived long enough to understand that our hardest decisions are never about the issue at hand; they're about everything we've carried, everything we ...

As we approach the finish lines of our lives, we often take time to reflect back on how we’ve spent the years of our existence. It’s a process that allows us to take stock of who we are and how we’ve lived, and it frequently provides a means to help us make decisions about any remaining unfinished business we may have. However, such soul-searching may also leave us with more questions than answers at a time when we need such clarity most, the alternative being pervasive indecisiveness that can b...
