Few films convey the decay behind the glossy facade of American suburban life in the late 1990s with such a sharp and poetic eye. This work, in which Sam Mendes took the director's chair for the first time, actually asks much deeper and universal questions while dealing with an ordinary midlife crisis: what is happiness, is freedom possible, and why do people become so alienated from each other? Kevin Spacey creates exactly the kind of antihero we want in this film, delivering one of his career-best performances. He is a man whose gaze is frozen, his voice is tired, his steps are heavy. It is as if the world around him has sworn to make him invisible. Annette Bening, on the other hand, plays a woman who looks perfect on the outside but crackles on the inside so believably that it is impossible not to feel uncomfortable from time to time while watching. The union of these two characters serves as a stark reminder of how modern marriages can sometimes devolve into a theater of meaninglessness. The real magic of the film lies in the philosophical depth hidden beneath this superficial narrative. Watching a plastic bag floating in the wind, realizing that beauty is hidden in the most unexpected places, finding meaningful truth in things that are seemingly distorted, forms the emotional backbone of the film. The neighbor boy, played by Wes Bentley, is the quiet yet compelling representative of this perspective. Alan Ball's script expertly walks the fine line between dark comedy and existential depth. It makes you think while making you laugh, and it releases tension while disturbing you. Thomas Newman's minimalist music perfectly complements the film's distinctive atmosphere, which is both melancholic and light-hearted. American Beauty is the kind of film that, after watching it, makes you start asking questions about your own life, your relationships, and the message you're sending to others. It is no coincidence that it won five Oscars in 1999; because it managed to capture both the spirit of the era and timeless human despair at the same time. Some movies are watched, some are felt. This falls into the second group.

The film American Beauty to me is a film about purpose. What is your purpose in life? The film teaches that there is such great beauty in the small things in life and that sometimes you need to take a step back to allow yourself to take in the unfiltered beauty in the small things like a plastic bag dancing in the wind, playing with the leaves. The film tells it's audience that the beauty in the small details is much greater than society's typical image of beauty. The prominent rose in the film ...

I first saw this film in my teen years. I didn't understand the plot of the movie back then but found the erotic scenes interesting. I think I was also impressed by Lesters change in attitude back then. Rewatching it in my early thirties the movie really catches me. The story of every character is catching, because everyone is struggling with different ordinary problems, some of them probably known by every adult. * Lester is fighting with his midlifecrisis and wants to break the devils-wh...

It was a ok movie. I didn't like Kevin Spacey creeping on a young teenager, but other then that it was a good movie.
