Martin Scorsese has repeatedly pushed the boundaries of crime cinema throughout his career, but this film, which he made in 2006, has gone down in cinema history as one of the culmination points of both his accumulation and mastery. Turning the dark, foggy streets of Boston into a chessboard, Scorsese does not just present a crime story to the audience here; he offers a deep interrogation of identity, loyalty and moral collapse. The essence of the story is based on two lives that run parallel to each other. One is a cop who infiltrates crime, the other is a gangster who has settled into the police. This mirror structure imparts tension to every scene of the film while simultaneously leaving the viewer in a constant state of moral ambiguity. The answer to the question of who is good and who is bad is becoming increasingly unclear; because Scorsese doesn't provide us with easy answers. Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon portray two men oppressed by different but equally oppressive pressures. While DiCaprio makes the burden he carries felt in every wrinkle on his face, Damon poses an entirely different kind of danger with his cool-headedness. However, the film's most compelling asset is Jack Nicholson. The atmosphere changes every time Costello takes the stage with his character; this man both makes you laugh and scares you, both attracts you and repels you. Nicholson fully unleashed his unique charisma in this role. William Monahan's cleverly crafted script keeps the dialogue sharp and the rhythm breathless. Despite its 151-minute runtime, the film never feels slow-paced; on the contrary, each scene contains a clue or a trap for the next. The audience is constantly on edge, constantly calculating, and almost always wrong. The film's Boston-specific atmosphere is also a distinct element. This story, which rises from the working-class neighborhoods of the city, uses its location not only as a background, but also as a fate that the characters come from and cannot escape. Origin means everything in this story. Scorsese won the Oscar for Best Director that year, and he deserved it. But the main thing is that the film retains its intensity on first viewing, even after many years. When it is viewed for the second time, completely different layers are opened.

I decided to celebrate the Summer Solstice by watching 'The Departed'. Don't ask me why. I had previously loved the Hong Kong-made 'Infernal Affairs' trilogy on which this is based. Usually I hate when international masterpieces get remade, but this was a sterling exception. This was controversial when it took in a cartload of Oscars, particularly finally a directorial nod for Scorsese, but don't be misled--it's easily one of his finest works. This is my Golden Rule on both remakes in general...

I think this might be my favourite performance from Leonardo DiCaprio as he takes on the mantle of undercover cop "Billy". On a perilous arms-length basis from his boss (Martin Sheen) pretty much from the start of his career, he must undergo the violent perils of prison so he can convincingly infiltrate the gang of hoodlum "Costello" (Jack Nicholson) who runs the crime syndicate in the city of Boston somewhat enigmatically. Meantime, we also meet "Colin" (Matt Damon) who is in a mirror-image pos...
