This production, which claims to be one of the bravest examples of youth stories about the search for identity, tells a journey of discovery that takes place in high school corridors but swims in much deeper waters. Directed by Siobhan McCarthy, the film sincerely conveys the complex relationship of a transgender young girl with both herself and her environment. The main character, played by Misha Osherovich, is introduced to us as an adolescent trying to find his own truth in the shadow of social expectations and family pressure. While the social hierarchy of the school, the fragility of first love, and the cost of expressing one's identity are discussed together, the film chooses to address these themes without falling into the trap of melodrama. Its positioning in the comedy genre reveals an important choice of the production: to tell a heavy social issue without being overwhelming and even making you laugh from time to time. The high school atmosphere, established with the contribution of young actors such as Nico Carney and Malia Pyles, feels both nostalgic and extremely current. Although love, belonging and the desire for acceptance are universal emotions, the film reconstructs them from a queer perspective and invites the audience to an unusual experience of empathy. It cannot be said that it is a perfect production, but the importance of the story it tells and the light touch it chooses while doing so take it far beyond an ordinary youth comedy.
