Sleepwalker
Details
Sleep is the moment when a person is most vulnerable. Consciousness closes its doors, the body surrenders, and the mind begins to wander in its own dark mazes. Directed by Brandon Auman, this blend of suspense and horror invites the viewer on an uneasy journey by placing precisely this moment of vulnerability at the center of its story. The film, starring Hayden Panettiere, intertwines themes of grief and loss with the phenomenon of sleepwalking to create a strange yet striking psychological backdrop. Panettiere, with her bright face that Hollywood has known for years, this time takes on a much darker and fragile character. She paints a portrait of a woman who bears the weight of her losses on her shoulders and gradually loses the distinction between day and night. The film, which stars Justin Chatwin, Beverly D'Angelo, and Mischa Barton, brings together familiar faces in unexpected ways. Sleepwalking has been used as a metaphor many times in the history of cinema; it has become an ancient narrative tool used to blur the boundaries of reality and dream, consciousness and the unconscious. This production also follows in the footsteps of this tradition by portraying its main character as someone lost both physically and spiritually. How does grief leave one half-awake? At what hour of the night do the ghosts of the past knock on the door? Instead of directly answering these questions, the film leaves them hanging in the audience's mind. When evaluated from an atmospheric perspective, the production opts to build its tension not through sudden scares but through a gradually unraveling atmosphere. Auman shows how even familiar images can become unsettling by capturing ordinary domestic spaces from unusual angles. This approach works at times, lags behind the pace at times; but it never truly leaves the viewer at ease throughout the entire journey. Although it is open to debate whether the film fulfills all its promises when viewed critically, the burden of emotion it carries as a horror story fueled by mourning cannot be ignored. For those who have lost something in their lives and feel as if they are drowning in that loss, the reflection on the screen will seem extremely familiar.

Technically proficient mess This movie looks good. It sounds good. That does not make it good. It is disjointed (in a bad way), with rules that are not internally consistent (which is a grave sin when it comes to horror-movies) and it is simply not very engaging. You don't care about the characters, the constant shifts in time and feeling becomes draining, and after a while you just check out. The 10s here are not really sincere, but a way to push the ratings up a bit, I suspect. It is sad when...
