Some heroes are better understood in their absence. Superman Returns, which carries all the weight of a return that has been expected for years, appears on the screen by asking exactly this question: if the world could survive without him, is he really still needed? Lex Luthor, played by Kevin Spacey, stands out as one of the most brilliantly conceived villains in the series; he presents a threat built on intelligence rather than violence. The film's real strength comes not from the action but from a poignant sense of longing. Every time that blue cloak floats across the sky, it evokes not a sense of security but almost a feeling of loss. Singer deliberately feeds this feeling; he fictionalizes the film not as a worship ceremony celebrating the legend, but as a deep longing for a bygone age. Undoubtedly, a production that receives its share of criticism. its 154-minute duration is stretched from time to time, some emotional moments are too difficult. Nevertheless, it manages to maintain an unusual tone compared to the superhero cinema of the period; instead of being a crowded box office movie, it prefers to be a quiet epic that turns into itself.
