Coraline
Details
Moving to a new house can make one feel like the loneliest person in the world, especially when no one really cares about you. Young Coraline finds herself at just such a threshold; a curious, energetic child with expectations for life, yet one who remains largely invisible to those around her. At this very moment of vulnerability, a hidden door that appears before him changes everything. Directed by Henry Selick, this stop-motion masterpiece combines the dark spirit of the source material with an extraordinary visual language while moving from Neil Gaiman's novel of the same name to the screen. The tangible, almost palpable texture of the stop-motion technique adds a unique depth to the film's atmosphere. Each frame is the product of hours of labor; and this labor reveals itself on the screen. The eyes made of buttons, that strange world that looks handmade, keeps the viewer on the thin line between innocence and danger. Although the film may appear at first glance to be a magical adventure for children, at its core it tells something much more layered. Family bonds, neglect, the boundaries between reality and fantasy, and the thought that every child experiences at some point: "I wish I had a different family.".. All of this is skillfully hidden behind bright colors and a sweet-looking parallel universe. The darkness beneath that shiny surface begins to seep in slowly, almost imperceptibly. Coraline, voiced by Dakota Fanning, is not a passive hero; she is a curious, stubborn character who finds her courage within herself. "The Other Mother," voiced by Teri Hatcher, deserves to be considered one of the most chilling female antagonists in cinema history. This dual contrast, both alluring and disturbing, constitutes the film's most powerful dynamic. This movie is perfect for those who believe in the magic of dark fairy tales, who can put visual narration ahead of dialogue and who value productions that leave a mark on the head after watching. It offers the viewer an experience that serves as a reminder of how terrifying both childhood and the separation from it can be.

Neil Gaiman is so contemporarily vital, both in literature and cinema, because he more than anyone else (with the possible exception of Terry Gilliam) notes that children and adults alike are fascinated with what lies outside our observable and tangible realms of existence. He realized the reasons storytelling have been significantly important since the dawn of mankind, and devised, as the Brothers Grimm did, that fairy tales and children's stories had to be haunting and entertaining to be both ...

Quite dark, but entertaining and very well done. One of the few american animated movies I liked.

Fantastic watch, will watch again, and do recommend. I really wish more movies would follow this simple and great movie structure. Instead of a typical 3-act structure (not that it isn't technically there), the story is much closer to that of a video game. You have a standard introductory act, but the rest of the movie is split into video game-esque "levels" that develop and unlock as Coraline makes new discoveries and completes different sections of the "map" / house. There is a lot o...
