The Summoning of Baby Blue
Details
The question of how dark a world may be hidden behind the innocent appearance of childhood games forms one of the most fertile soils of horror cinema. Dec Oct. This Argentine production signed by Sergio Gonzalez takes the urban legend known as the "Baby Blue" invocation ritual and spreading especially among young people as its main axis, dragging the viewer into a familiar but so eerie atmosphere of suspense. Horror films centered around ritualistic narratives hold a deep-rooted place in cinema's memory. However, the success of such narratives often stems not from the ritual itself but from the inner world of the characters experiencing that ritual. Gonzalez is also making a bet at exactly this point: that a dangerous game in which young people are blindly involved turns into not only a supernatural, but also a psychological showdown. The young cast, led by Valeria San Martin and Justina Ceballos, forms the backbone of the film. Giovanni Onetti and Nicolás Onetti, familiar names in Argentine cinema, provide experienced support to the director's vision. The closed and overwhelming atmosphere created by the images reflects the unique texture of Latin American horror cinema, which builds an almost hypnotic tension that gradually engulfs, unlike the sudden scare reflexes in American productions. The film also explores, as a subplot, how urban legends that go viral in the age of social media can turn into real dangers. The impact of superstitions that seep through screens on young minds adds meaning to the story beyond its mere horror film format. This layer allows the viewer to ask, "What if it were real?" rather than asking the question "Why is this belief spreading so quickly?" it makes me think. Having an average TMDB rating doesn't mean the movie isn't worth watching. On the contrary, such productions are mostly remembered as works that directly appeal to a certain audience and leave an original feeling with their flaws. This small but ambitious horror film, where ritual, darkness and the desperation of the young characters intersect, stands out as a curious example of Latin America's growing horror cinema scene.
