Loss leaves one not only with pain but also with the unknown. When someone suddenly and without reason withdraws from life, it sometimes becomes a dark corridor full of questions for those left behind. Directed by Nayla Al Khaja, this Bay production navigates exactly that corridor; it brings the physical and spiritual destruction of bereavement to the screen both as a drama and as a fantasy thriller that makes you feel that things are much more complicated than they seem. The inner world of the woman who unexpectedly loses her twin sister stands out as the central theme of the film. There is a concept that is often mentioned in the mourning literature: "Phantom pain." The fact that the body is still feeling a limb that is no longer there. Losing one's twin, however, takes this much deeper; because for twins, loss is not the loss of a part, but rather the loss of a reflection. The film uses this psychological vulnerability as its foundation and builds layer upon layer of an invisible yet palpable threat upon it. In Arab cinema, narratives about demons and hauntings draw from a cultural root different from the Western horror tradition. In this film, too, it is possible to sense that distinction; the atmosphere is not set solely to scare, but to make one sense the presence of a threshold, a "door." Tinnitus, self-induced hallucinations, moving shadows... All these elements ask the viewer, "Is this real, or is it the production of a corrupted mind?" it is arranged in such a way that the question is constantly asked. The female-dominated cast, especially Shaimaa El Fadul, not only carries the emotional weight of the film; it also gives the narrative a sincere credibility. Nayla Al Khaja attempts to tell sensitive human stories, familiar from her previous short film experiences, this time on a much larger and darker canvas. This production, which is set for 2026, seems like the kind of thing worth patiently waiting for to get a chance to watch. In this period, when Gulf cinema continues to find its own voice, it promises to be an important stop for those who are curious about that mysterious threshold whose door is opened with mourning.
