A Brighter Summer Day
Details
Taipei in the 1960s bears witness to the quiet collapse of both an era and a generation. The children of families who fled the mainland and Decamped to Taiwan have built hierarchies, gangs and codes of loyalty among themselves as they try to hold on to the island. This huge work by Edward Yang conveys a first love that sprouted precisely in this fragile world and the tragic end of that love; but in doing so, it paints a much bigger picture. With a runtime exceeding four hours, the film maintains a narrative pace that doesn't bog it down but, on the contrary, keeps it breathable. Instead of rushing through the events, Yang slowly and thoroughly conveys to the audience the bleak atmosphere in which the characters live. The Taipei streets, abandoned buildings, echoing music sounds and small power struggles carried out in the dark of night, filtered through the eyes of young Xiao Si'r, convey the spirit of the era almost tangibly. The majority of the images are shot in low light; this choice is not accidental but the visual manifestation of political and social unrest. At the heart of the story is not only the path to a murder, but the loss of innocence. Xiao Si'r is an idealistic, honest and pure adolescent. The world around him/her is not broad enough to accommodate these characteristics. We are watching the portrait of a youth trapped between his first love, his search for belonging, his reckoning with his father's authority and the Decrees imposed by the gang. This portrait speaks not only to Taiwan's history but also to the universal helplessness of the growing-up experience. Inspired by a true event, the film unfolds with documentary-like detachment; yet it loses none of its emotional intensity. On the contrary, that detached perspective makes some scenes even more shocking. Zhang Zhen's performance as Xiao Si'r is particularly noteworthy; it is an acting style that conveys emotion without words, revealing the burden she carries through body language. Considered one of the strongest examples of slow cinema, this film is the kind that demands patience but pays off handsomely. The reason why it is considered among the peak works of cinema history is not only Deceptively Deceptively directed, but also the ability to keep time, space and people together at the same time.

This isn't so much a drama as an intimate observational documentary following the lives of people recently arrived on the island of Taiwan after the Chinese communist party took control of the mainland. There is still a considerable degree of militaristic life amongst the population, and the secret police are never far from the minds of the adults whilst the adolescents come to terms with their own, quite often gang-related, issues too. Those are not, initially at any rate, gangs in the violent ...
