May 1st is also one of these dates. This iconic spot loaded with the accumulation of decades in Taksim Square, right in the middle of Istanbul, became the stage once again in 2025, but this time it wasn't just the slogans that were there, there were also young hands who chose not to stand in front of the camera, but to hold the camera together. This documentary, bearing the signature of Kolektif Sinema, brings to the screen the testimony of university students who took to the streets on May 1, 2025. But the word "testimony" here does not mean a cold eye watching events from the outside, but a look that stands right in the middle of it, feels it, and takes responsibility for recording it. The fact that it was produced with a collective understanding of cinema also takes the film beyond an ordinary documentary: here we are not talking about a single director's interpretation of the world, but the common voice of a group. The main question in this production, in which student collectives and university women's collectives stand out, is this: to try to understand what shapes the young generation's exit to these areas, what motivation keeps them in that crowd, and what this will means beyond just being a moment. The documentary seems to focus more on the questions "why" and "how" rather than a simple "what happened" question. Its mere 70-minute runtime is a reflection of the film's desire to maintain its intensity rather than disintegrate and slacken. It is also noteworthy to add the element of suspense next to the documentary genre label, because the tension that exists in the street reality of that day, combined with the raw energy of the images, perhaps puts the viewer right in the middle of that crowd. This film, which is only 2026-made and very new, stands out as one of the most recent examples of independent and collective production in Turkey. Capturing history on camera while it is so hot makes it both valuable and controversial. What is presented to the viewer is not merely a document of a day, but perhaps also clues to how a generation saw itself.
