The deep blue waters of the Mediterranean are not always as calm as they seem. Just beneath the surface where the sun breaks through, dangers that push the boundaries of human imagination may lurk. Directed by Jonathan Zuck, this horror film draws the viewer into a familiar nightmare by focusing on precisely this deep-rooted fear, namely the question of what deep water is hiding from us. The story begins with a newlywed couple embarking on a romantic sea voyage; at first glance, it appears to be an innocent escapist narrative. The fishing boat, the endless blue of the Mediterranean, and the fragile happiness of a new dream built together by two people... But Zuck is consciously building this tranquility; not to comfort the audience, but to destroy that comfort in a more drastic way. Although he adopts the classic thriller approach that shark-themed survival films have brought to the genre, Chum also winks at the psychological breaking points of the trapped characters. The couple portrayed by Alice Eve and Eric Michael Cole presents a very different dynamic on screen. The special vulnerability that comes with the early days of marriage takes on a completely different dimension when faced with danger. Realizing you don't know someone when you thought you did can sometimes be much scarier than the threat outside. Although the film does not skillfully weave this dual tension with the underlying danger beneath the surface, it at least makes an attempt that is worth considering. There is a cruelty inherent in high seas films: the characters have nowhere to run, help is far away, and nature is by no means on man's side. Chum blends this despair with the deceptive beauty of the Mediterranean to create a unique atmosphere. Although it may be familiar territory for genre enthusiasts, the film's sense of tension promises an immersive experience when approached with the right expectations. What lies at the heart of shark films is never merely a creature; the real issue is confronting one's own fragility. Chum reminds us exactly this.

This looks cheaper than it is. They got some money together for this, but didn't spend it where it needed to be spent, and as a result the movie looks cheap. The nature-footage of sharks swimming around is nice and all, but the moment your switch to the cgi shark this just takes a dive. The casting is decent, but the writing and directing isn't doing anything, and the story is thin, at best. This is one best to avoid.
