TIRMAN

The most ordinary moments of daily life can sometimes ignite the spark of the deepest questions. The escalator at the metro exit is an object that thousands of people pass over every morning and evening without even realizing it, using it without thinking. Melek Gümülek, on the other hand, scrutinizes this almost invisible detail and builds a breathtaking tension in just seven minutes. Elif notices while getting off the subway on an ordinary evening: The escalators are not innocent. The sounds around you, the announcements, the system; they make you feel like something is being whispered, something is being imposed. This awareness pushes him to a small but courageous resistance. He chooses to take his own steps instead of getting on the machine. However, it seems like those stairs have no end. The film transforms the issue of surveillance society and the commodification of personal data from an abstract discussion into a physical, bodily experience. The viewer both grows tired and becomes trapped in that oppressive cycle along with Elif's steps. The short-length format is not a limitation here; on the contrary, it is a deliberate choice to intensify the tension. As the seconds pass, the atmosphere becomes increasingly claustrophobic; a simple subway exit transforms into an almost existential trap. This minimalist narrative, carried single-handedly by Elif Yıldıran, proves how powerful wordless moments can be. If so much can be conveyed through a character's mere walk, breathing, and gaze, this is a testament to both the acting and the direction. Gümülek manages to disturb, make the audience think, and make them question without requiring large budgets or complex plots. In today's world, where every click, every step, and every choice becomes a data trail, this short film captures an extremely poignant moment. While questioning what the system offers and refusing to accept it may seem like a form of freedom, that very freedom can sometimes lead to an endless path. At this very point, the film pulls the viewer out of their comfort zone and leaves them with a strange and unsettling question: Is there really a way out?
