Summerween
Details

Celebrating Halloween in the middle of the summer heat may sound like fun, but this independent slasher production directed by Ryan Ebert doesn't hesitate to show how dark this idea can evolve. Summerween takes its name from the popular culture tradition of creating a Halloween atmosphere during the summer months; costumes, pumpkins and all those spooky decorations appear regardless of season. The film places this strange, displaced spirit of celebration on a backdrop of tension. The story centers around a group of young people who come together in the middle of summer vacation. This gathering, which starts with the promise of sun, crowds and fun, soon turns into something completely different. Because a killer clown is walking among them or nearby, and this figure carries all the weight of classic slasher iconography; unpredictable, sharp as a knife and visually unsettling. Traces of the limited budget inherent in independent productions are felt in the film, but the original commitment to genre cinema cannot be ignored. The young cast, especially Clint Morrison and Sophia Sabol, try to bring the desperation and panic dynamic that is essential to slasher movies to the stage. Rather than being an ambitious production, Summerween aims to offer a familiar feeling to genre lovers; It feeds on that strange, disturbing disharmony created by the summer heat and the Halloween darkness. Although the critical scores are not brilliant, it has the potential to appeal to a certain audience.
