Sometimes it takes courage to step into a journey that passes through that uncertain threshold between waking and sleeping. This experimental production, directed by Julia Günther, treats the fear of deep water, known as thalassophobia, not only as a thriller but also as an existential metaphor. That vast darkness under the water speaks of both a physical threat and the layers of the unconscious. The film, which follows a triptych structure with a three-part structure, takes its name from the artistic tradition; Just as a painting consisting of three panels side by side explains the whole, these three pieces reflect complementary spiritual states and moments of awakening. Characters played by names such as Anamaria Palade Flondor Strain, Ines Rehberger and Tabea Keymling are forced to confront their own fears in an inner world woven with water and dream imagery. Günther prioritizes visual language and bases his narrative on emotion rather than words. The liberating and destructive nature of water constitutes the fundamental contradiction that determines the spirit of the film. Waking up here does not just mean opening the eyes, it means running away from something or confronting something. Staying away from the usual narrative patterns, this production prefers to leave the audience in its own deep waters instead of presenting a clear story line. It can be a challenging experience for audiences who are impatient or accustomed to linear narrative; but it offers a very fertile ground for exploration for those who like to pursue dream logic and archetypal symbols.
