Il Sorpasso
Details
Italy in 1962 had taken on a completely different atmosphere with the economic miracle. The shadows of war had dissipated, prosperity shone on the surface; but what lay beneath this brightness? Dino Risi asks exactly this question on the coastal roads of Italy, in the wind of an open car. Carefree Life is a much deeper film than it seems. From the surface, what emerges is a sunny summer journey, the unexpected union of two different men, and colorful glimpses of provincial Italy. But Risi's camera hides such a subtle sadness within this scene that while the audience laughs, they also feel a pang of emotion somewhere. Bruno, played by Vittorio Gassman, has gone down in history as one of the most unforgettable characters in Italian cinema. This man, who lives life like a grand show, king at the wheel and lion at the table, is actually the very embodiment of modern man running around without knowing what he's after. The contrast established by Jean-Louis Trintignant's quiet and reserved Roberto forms the backbone of the film. One acts as if they have everything, while the other hasn't touched anything yet. As these two figures transform into each other's mirror image, the viewer is drawn into an inner reckoning. Using the road movie format, Gamsız Hayat actually transforms into a social anatomy. Every face encountered along the way, every stop, reflects a different layer of Italian society at the time. The crowds flowing to the resorts, old acquaintances, broken families, momentary happiness; all together make you feel the enthusiasm and emptiness of that period at the same time. The film's black-and-white images serve not nostalgia but clarity. Each frame is so precise that even the sun shines as if it were cartoonish. Risi manages to infiltrate drama through comedy both skillfully and ruthlessly; and it literally hits you in the face towards the finale how thin the line separating these two emotions really is. Carefree Life is a film that will make you smile, maybe make you laugh, and then suddenly silence you. This work from the golden age of Italian cinema is still fresh and still brutally honest today, as a kind of work that understands time, not competes with time.
