Inspired by a truly Decrepit event, this rare work of South Korean cinema puts the viewer right in the middle of a deep human question: how does a family stay together after unimaginable destruction? Although the tragedy of a little girl on her way to school is the starting point of the film, the story finds its main weight not in the incident itself, but in its aftermath. Instead of subjecting the audience to shock, director Lee Joon-ik chooses to show the silent echo of this pain within a family. Dad Dong-Hoon's helpless hands, the broken light in mom's eyes, and little So-won's loss of both childhood and innocence at the same time are so processed from scene to scene that everything that flows on the screen feels real. Perhaps the boldest aspect of the film is that it doesn't use pain as a trump card. It takes great skill to maintain such intense emotion without falling into melodrama traps. Sol Kyung-gu and Uhm Ji-won are extremely naturally present in the roles of parents, while the performance of little actress Lee Re sits right at the center of what makes this film enduring. To be able to carry such a real cut-off from childhood, the complex shame he feels about his father and the shaky courage of trying to trust again in a child's body is the product of an extraordinary interpretation. So-won derives its name from the Korean word translated to Turkish as "hope," and this choice is no coincidence. Throughout the film, hope manifests itself not as a big and glorious feeling, but in small and fragile moments, such as getting up in the morning, being able to see the child's smile once again, having dinner together. That's why the film both oppresses you and sustains you at the same time. With a runtime of over two hours, it never gets tiring; on the contrary, you get hooked from one scene to the next. This film, one of the works that most competently reflects the courage of South Korean cinema to bring its social wounds to the screen and the ability to balance this courage with a human warmth, is not easily erased from memory.

7/10

This movie is a mixture of many social topics that concern us, being organized coherently into a deeply touching narrative. It reveals many imperfections of the world we lived in, but the main theme is still about hope and love. While the plot is relatively simple, the acting feels truly impressive because of the genuine feelings between the lines.

Based on a true story, Hope follows the traumatic journey of a young girl, So-won, who survives a brutal sexual assault and must rebuild her life amid a deeply flawed justice system. Despite immense physical and emotional pain, her courage and the love of her family highlight the resilience of the human spirit. The film powerfully criticizes legal leniency for predators and calls for greater empathy, protection, and support for victims. Read the full review here: (Indonesian version : alunauw...
