Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion
Details
this film, which originated in Italy in 1970, has gone down in cinema history as a masterpiece in which director Elio Petri revealed his dark intelligence and his deep discomfort with the political climate of the period in the most naked way. The work, which won the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes and then the Hollywood Foreign Language Film Oscar, has still not lost its relevance and jarring effect today. Gian Maria Volonté's performance in the lead role presents one of cinema's most disturbing portraits. Volonté plays a man who both represents and disregards the law, essentially putting his own crime on display. The conflict within the character forms the engine of the film: What does the system do when someone in power defies it or commits a crime themselves? The answer both makes the audience laugh and scares them. Petri addresses this question with a Kafkaesque logic. However, contrary to Kafka's narrative, which swallows the innocent individual in the mazes of bureaucracy, the culprit here is the system itself, and this system not only protects the criminal, but makes him invisible. This is where the film's dark humor comes into play; the scene you're watching is not a criminal investigation but a caricature of power. Your smile and your terror become intertwined. Ennio Morricone's music adds a completely different dimension to this equation. A satirical, almost farcical musical style sets the on-screen tension on an even stranger and more frightening plane. Morricone conveys the absurd spirit of the story so masterfully through the music that the film's melody becomes etched in your memory. The work draws inspiration from the political tension, authoritarian tendencies, and institutional decay of 1970s Italy. But the story it tells is not confined to any particular geography or period. The idea that someone who holds the law in their hands can exist above the law expresses a historically universal concern. Therefore, even more than fifty years after its release, the film asks the same questions and leaves the same unanswered questions when viewed. The Investigation into a Citizen Beyond All Doubt does not promise a comfortable viewing experience. But the impression it leaves on minds is far more lasting than the sum of dozens of ordinary thrillers.
